Cadence13 to Partner on New Season of Award-Winning Podcast Miniseries “Blockbuster”
Adweek’s 2019 “Creative Podcast of the Year” returns for new season on Academy Award-winning director James Cameron
Ten-episode dramatic limited series explores Cameron’s devastating struggles and mesmerizing rise
New York, NY (June 16, 2020)—Cadence13, a leading premium podcast company, today announced an exclusive partnership with Epicleff Media for a new season of Blockbuster—the award-winning, critically acclaimed biopic miniseries with the most immersive sound design ever created in a podcast series—which will focus on the life and career arc of Academy Award-winning director James Cameron. The series will star The Walking Dead’s Ross Marquand in the lead role as Cameron.
Season One of the series, Blockbuster: The Story of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, told the story of the two visionary worldbuilders who revolutionized 1970s Hollywood with the idea of the “summer blockbuster” with Jaws and Star Wars. The miniseries was named Adweek’s 2019 “Creative Podcast of the Year” and won two New York Festivals Radio Awards, “Best Mini- Series” and “Best Biography/Profile.”
The next season of this groundbreaking narrative audiodrama series will focus on how seeing Star Wars led Cameron, a 22-year-old truck driver, to embark on one of the most prolific directing careers in film, from The Terminator to Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, True Lies, Titanic and Avatar.
Blockbuster: The Story of James Cameron will launch on June 17, 2020, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, RADIO.COM and everywhere podcasts are available. Bonus episodes will be available throughout the season. Listen to the trailer and subscribe to the series here: https://bit.ly/BlockbusterPod.
The ten-episode series takes place from 1977 to 1997 and follows Cameron’s meteoric rise, from bootstrapping his own short film to gambling everything, time and again, for a chance to make the most expensive film of all-time: Titanic. Blockbuster follows the risks, relationships and crushing defeats of Cameron as a Hollywood outsider trying to break his way in, including key relationships that fueled an unrelenting ambition and led to the biggest box office hits of all-time.
Blockbuster: The Story of James Cameron will be written, narrated and directed by three-time Emmy-award winning journalist and filmmaker Matt Schrader (Score: A Film Music Documentary), with feature-film-caliber sound design from Peter Bawiec M.P.S.E. (Midway) that blends original and archival audio. In addition to starring Marquand (The Walking Dead, Avengers: Endgame), the series also features over 75 characters, played by an extensive cast including Mojean Aria (AppleTV’s See), Neil Dickson (Inland Empire), John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), Jill Remez, Lex Lang, Ray Chase, Jessica Pennington, Robin Atkin Downes and many more.
The original score will be composed by Fernando Arroyo Lascurain and tap into the feel of iconic cinema of 1980s and 1990s Hollywood, including James Horner’s score for Titanic. The series will be produced by Schrader and award-winning motion picture producer Elena Bawiec, and casting by Johnny Gidcomb, known for his ADR work on six of the top ten highest grossing films of all-time, including Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Cadence13 to explore James Cameron's uniquely inspiring journey, which has pushed us to innovate in ways never before done on any storytelling format," Schrader said. “We believe this miniseries represents a breakthrough for what high-production audio storytelling can be, as we tap into critical moments of danger, frustration, fear, pressure, and joy that have shaped the iconic filmmaker."
“We’re focused on high quality storytelling and production here at C13,” said Chris Corcoran, Chief Content Officer, Cadence13. “We are thrilled to partner on such an incredibly creative franchise as Blockbuster, and the talented team behind it.”
